I was interviewed recently for an inspirational radio show and the topic we were discussing was change. One of the first questions I was asked was what was my personal wake up call that I had to change my life and how did I recognise it.
This was such a great question as I remember the moment it happened. I was, to anyone on the outside looking in, living a very successful life. I had a good job, good money, I was married and it all looked good on paper. But I was miserable. One day I drove my lovely new car up the hill overlooking the village I lived in, looked down on my thatched cottage with roses over the door and asked myself why.
I realised in that moment that I was about to do something out of character, I was about to have an affair and I knew in that moment I had to leave because it just didn’t feel right.
This is the key to the wake up moment – it’s a visceral feeling.
Often you are about to do something that is out of character because you just have to check you are still alive. Looking back now I can see that in that moment that I was about to add yet another thing into my life to try to feel – anything. And, because that feeling of disconnection can be so hard we will try anything to distract ourselves so we don’t have to feel it.
When we live these lives of quiet desperation – a description an ex client of mine used to describe her life when she woke up – we have two choices. Either we keep on doing or getting things or creating dramas to distract our attention that we are not living our truth. Or we take the courageous option and start to explore what needs to change.
For some the first option goes on for years. We go for the fancier and fancier holidays, the money, the houses, the cars, the clothes – the ‘stuff’. And for a while after the acquisition of them we feel good. Problem is, that good feeling wears off and that empty feeling just gets bigger.
And I want to be clear here, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having all those lovely things – they just can’t be what your happiness hangs on. You have to find something deeper within you to express in the world and then if you want those fun things they are the icing on the cake – not the cake.
It can be a scary realisation
I know having worked with people for over 12 years who are at this wake up point that it is a scary point in life. Many times I speak with people about working together and discovering what brings that inner happiness and there is fear. However fear is not a good enough reason for not doing it. Because all fear is, is a lack of knowledge – an unknown – and the great thing is that by starting to understand yourself better you get to know yourself and fear then lets you go.
Sometimes jumping in the deep end is just too big an ask and so I have a programme called The Passion Test in which you can dip your toe. Learning what your true passions are about is the first step and so this stand-alone programme allows you to try it out before you jump in for the big change. And if you decide that that is as far as you want to go then you will have some valuable information to make new decisions as and when you want to. What is also great is that you will start to feel better about yourself because you did dip your toe in.

These wake-up calls are pivotal moments in life and they will keep coming round until we hear them. Looking back in my life it took a while for me to hear it. However, I have not looked back since dipping my toe in and starting that journey towards understanding what makes me tick and what constitutes happiness in my world.
If this resonates with you – if you are experiencing the wake up call – then let’s chat.
